The illustrations featured in the Mechanica series of books are created, layer by later, in Adobe Photoshop™ from photographs of machinery and other real world objects. Each image takes up to 70 hours to create and consists of thousands of individual layers.

The images that are used to construct Mechanica are sourced from museums, workshops, science labs and everyday objects.

The next step in the process is to 'cut out' individual elements from the source images.

The Over time I have created a 'library' of parts ready for use.

Adobe Photoshop™ is used to bring the individual elements together to create Mechanica. Each element can be resized, warped, coloured, darkened and/or lightened, reordered and trimmed to create the individual creatures. Starting with a simple shape, more complex elements can be designed.
